More often than not, a major in the arts isn’t a choice—it’s a calling. But talent and passion will only get you so far. If you want to succeed in the arts, it also takes dedication, practice, and training (to name a few). Coker’s Department of Dance, Music and Theatre is designed to help you put all these pieces together, so you can turn your passion into a career.
As a dance, music or theatre major, you will be challenged and supported by a community of students and professors who will push you to create and achieve on a higher level. On top of the technical and artistic training that you’ll receive in class, you’ll be directly involved in productions from day one. From performance opportunities your freshman year to a defining capstone experience as a senior, you will have the chance to apply your skills throughout all four years, helping you to grow and develop as an artist.
On campus, you’ll practice and perform in state-of-the-art facilities—the $6.5 million Elizabeth Boatwright Coker Performing Arts Center includes a 466-seat proscenium theater, audio and video editing suites, a black box theater, two dance studios, a music recording studio and a rehearsal room. A variety of out-of-classroom experiences (such as conferences, internships, tours, and study abroad) give you even more opportunities to take your education beyond the classroom—so that when you graduate, you’ll be ready to take it into your career.
