¡Saludos de Coker College! We are excited about the Spanish Program here at Coker College.
As you know, the need for proficient Spanish speakers is growing. Worldwide, Spanish is the third most widely used language after Chinese and English. Here in the United States, Spanish is second only to English. Students who are bilingual in English and Spanish can have increased professional and personal opportunities when they graduate from college. Our alumni work in the fields of education, business, and healthcare.
At Coker College, we offer a major and minor in Spanish. For majors and minors, we offer courses in language, culture, literature, and professional Spanish. Due to our small class size, our students get to know each other well. Our students have the opportunity to participate in service learning and study abroad. All of our majors, even native and heritage speakers, spend a semester studying abroad so that they gain greater cultural competence and linguistic proficiency. While abroad, our students keep in touch through blogs, Facebook and e-mail. All of us look forward to reading and commenting on their posts. When they return from study abroad, our majors complete an internship or senior seminar in a specific area of interest.
Outside the classroom, we sponsor a variety of events. We take students on excursions to festivals, museums, and restaurants. We also invite special speakers to campus. In recent years, we have taken students on May Interim trips to Costa Rica and Mexico. Students can get involved in other international activities by joining the Coker College Culture Club.Come join the excitement! ¡Viva el español!
