“I will hold myself and others accountable for the sustainability of our environment.”
When new freshman students arrive at Coker, they pledge to uphold this statement—one of the six pillars of the Student Covenant. The Green Team exists to educate campus about sustainability and to promote sustainable practices at Coker and within our wider Hartsville community, because sustainability is one of our core values. But mainly, we care about sustainability because Coker is our home away from home. We practice sustainability because we care about our campus and our world.
Who We Are
The Green Team is a campus-wide committee made up of about 15-20 student, staff and faculty volunteers across many different departments. The group meets regularly to discuss ideas, plan events and projects, and move sustainable initiatives forward at Coker.
What We Do
Ultimately, our goal is for Coker College to be a leading institution in modeling sustainable practices and education. To accomplish this goal, we focus on three main areas: Education, Management and Events.
- Increase visibility and awareness
- Environmental literacy
- Funding and fundraising
- Administrative recommendations
- Assist with existing events
- Coordinate new events
We are very thankful to have support and assistance from many campus and community organizations, including (but not limited to):
- Student Government Association
- Kalmia Gardens
- Sonoco Products Company
- Duke Energy
