Sponsored by Wells Fargo and Coker Enactus
June 13-17, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.
The Wells Fargo Summer Business Academy at Coker College Coker College will host a week-long (June 13th-17th) summer business program targeting rising high school juniors and seniors with a record of achievement and a demonstrated interest in the study of business related fields.
Students will have the opportunity to attend the week long overnight program on the Coker College campus learning about topics such as marketing, management, and entrepreneurship from college faculty members, as well as regional executives, small business owners, and entrepreneurs. They will also have the opportunity to interact with student members of Coker’s Enactus (formerly Students in Free Enterprise) team, which has placed in the top 40 nationally in each of the last two years at the National Exposition. These experiences will come in the context of Coker’s round table approach to teaching, a format that prioritizes student engagement and participation in the learning process.
Coker College’s summer business academy will allow some of the area’s best high school students to learn from one another while also learning from a team of highly successful faculty, guests, and student mentors. Using Coker’s engaged model, students will explore multiple facets of developing and growing a business from the perspectives of case studies that put them in the position of making decisions about topics ranging from supply chain development to marketing strategies. With college students from the Enactus team serving as mentors, student teams will be assigned mock initiatives and will collaborate in the development of business plans for those projects. They will have the unique opportunity to present their business plans to a panel of faculty members and local business people with the best plan being awarded.
Students may be selected through a process of application coupled with nominations from high school instructors and guidance counselors. Upon successful passing all sections of the academy, students will be eligible for three semester hours of college credit for BA 101, Introduction to Business. Through a Wells Fargo investment, all costs are substantially underwritten (students, programming, housing), allowing the academy to be accessible to all academically qualified students and to be a service to the community and the region.
To be eligible to apply, students must be rising high school juniors or seniors with a GPA of at least a 2.8 (on a 4.0 scale). Interested students should submit a completed application which can be found below, an essay that explains why they are interested and provide a copy of their most recent transcript or report card.
