Chemistry is the study of the composition, structure, and properties of matter—or in other words, the makeup of our entire universe.

Chemistry is often called the central science because it is the central bridge between the physical sciences, the life sciences, and the applied sciences such as medicine and engineering.  By understanding chemicals and chemical processes, we gain insight into various physical and biological phenomena.

At Coker, the chemistry minor provides a solid background in chemical concepts in organic chemistry, quantitative analysis, and laboratory experience. It can complement many majors, such as the physical sciences, business, statistics, education, pre-med, health sciences, and more.

A minor in chemistry requires:
– 19 hours of coursework, including 8 credit hours of CHE 101/101L and 102/102L and
– 11 credit hours selected from any of the courses acceptable for the major in chemistry.
The 11 credit hours must include 2 semester hours of upper-division laboratories.

By pursuing a minor in chemistry at Coker University, students will gain oral and written communication skills and an understanding of chemical processes and will be better prepared for careers and future studies in scientific fields and academic research.

Forensic Science

Chemistry isn’t just about working in a lab. It has real-world applications and chemistry majors go on to pursue a wide variety of careers. For those interested in forensic science, this course is a valuable introduction with a focus on inorganic and organic characterization, DNA and blood analysis, and other crime scene investigation techniques.

In this course, you’ll study carbon compounds—an essential ingredient in all living things. As you learn about the chemistry of life and related chemical reactions, you’ll get a glimpse into the science that serves as a foundation for careers in medicine, pharmacology, product development, and much more.

Analytical Chemistry

From the nutritional labels on our food to blood test results from a yearly physical, the influence of analytical chemistry is part of our daily lives. In this course, you will learn about theories and methods of problem-solving in chemical analysis, including instrumentation, accuracy, precision, and data optimization.
