Katie Pate joins the coaching staff at Georgia State University
Georgia State women’s basketball head coach Gene Hill announced Katie Pate, A.G. Hall and Tiffany Morton as his coaching staff on Friday. “I’m so excited to welcome this group to our Panther Family,” Hill said. “When trying to hire a staff I thought it was important to find people who were not just great coaches but better people.” The trio brings more than 45 years of coaching experience to Decatur Street.
Katie Pate returns to Georgia State after a stint in 2014 with the Panthers. Pate most recently served as the associate head coach at Marshall in Huntington, W.V. At Marshall, Pate helped coach junior Shayna Gore to a 19.5 points-per-game season which ranked second-best in Conference-USA.
Prior to Marshall, Pate was head coach at Lenoir-Rhyne for three seasons. L-R was the nation’s ninth-best defensive team in 2016-17 with a record of 17-12 overall.
Pate also spearheaded L-R’s fundraising for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund, raising nearly $10,000 for research, more money than any other NCAA Division II institution on the national level (300 programs).
Prior to Pate’s stop at GSU in 2014, she was Lenoir-Rhyne’s associate head coach and recruiting coordinator for four seasons. Pate teamed with former head coach Todd Starkey to lead the Bears to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances and top 25 national rankings in 2012-13 and 2013-14.
In addition to Georgia State, Marshall and Lenoir-Rhyne, she has also been an assistant coach at Wingate (2009-10), USC Upstate (1999-2001) and Coker (1998-99). Pate and Hill both graduated from Coker in 1997.
“The opportunity to reunite with Katie Pate once again was too great to pass on. I have known her for over 20 years and her experience as a former head coach including her recruiting connections in the southeast will help our program immediately,’ Hill said. “She will be a great teacher, mentor and role model for our players.”
