A Service of Witness to the Resurrection led by the Revs. John Cook, Lib McGregor Simmons, Sam McGregor, Jr., and Kate McGregor Mosley will take place at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, June 21, at Shandon Presbyterian Church. A reception will follow in Davis Hall.
Born on May 25, 1926, Jane was the daughter of Rhett M and Kate Evans McGregor. She received an A.B. in English and History from Coker College, B.S. in Library Science from UNC-Chapel Hill, and M.Ed. in Early Childhood Education from the University of South Carolina.
Jane’s life was characterized by books, children, church, friends, and family, but most of all, by an indomitable spirit which manifested itself in loving service for the common good of all. While her body bore the marks of the polio that she contracted at the age of 3, she lived an active, generous life that knew no boundaries.
Her professional life was rich and full as she served in various children’s library positions in Spartanburg, Florence, Cincinnati and Wellston, OH. She retired in 1992 as Children’s Services Consultant, SC State Library. She also served as adjunct instructor in children’s literature and children’s library services at USC and other universities. Jane was active in the American Library Association, serving on the Newbery-Caldecott and other committees. In recognition of her service, she received the ALA’s 1981 Grolier Award and the SC Association of School Librarians Distinguished Service Award. She was honored as the Cincinnati Enquirer’s Woman of the Year.
Jane was a ruling elder in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), serving faithfully at Shandon Presbyterian and her various other congregations, as well as in presbytery and General Assembly roles.
Jane was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Sam E. McGregor and his wife Betty, her sister Catherine McGregor Faver and her husband Bill, and her brother Angus W. McGregor. She is survived by her sister-in-law Wynn Horton McGregor, two generations of adored and adoring nieces and nephews, treasured cousins, and special friends Pat Feehan, Liz Quell, Chris Billinsky, and Myra Brown.
Memorials may be made to Shandon Presbyterian Witherspoon Scholarship Fund, 607 Woodrow St, Columbia, SC 29205, or Thornwell, 302 S Broad St, Clinton, SC 29325.
