Betty Herring White Atkinson was the daughter of the late William Dudley Herring and Lottie Richardson Herring. She was born January 2, 1933 in the Spring Branch Community of Marion County. She died February 12, 2024.
After graduating valedictorian of the 1951 class of Marion High School, she attended Coker College for two years. She worked for Atkinson Implement Company in Marion for thirty-one years until their closure. Her second career was with the USDA/Farm Service Agency from which she retired.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Marion where she was a member of the Derrick Sunday School Class, the Morning Study Group, and the UMW. In her earlier years she was also a member of Marion Pilot Club and the Azalea Garden Club, as well as several bridge clubs.
Surviving Betty are a son, Dwayne C (Melanie) White of Florence, and a daughter, Belva (Carol) White of Atlanta, GA; two grandsons, Jesse (Hayley) White of Greer and Lee White of Florence. Also surviving are two stepsons, Jim (Pam) Atkinson of Auburndale, Florida, and Don (Jeanie) Atkinson of Nevarre Beach, FL, as well as seven step-grandchildren.
Besides her parents, Betty was predeceased by her first Husband, Douglas Carlyle White; second husband, James Hugh Atkinson; her sister, Eunice H Allen and her brother, Leon Waldo Herring, as well as several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held at 11 AM on Friday, February 16, 2024 at Rose Hill Cemetery, directed by Richardson Funeral Home. The service will be streamed live on the Richardson Funeral Home (Marion, SC) Facebook page for those unable to attend. The family will be receiving friends from 5:30-7:00 PM on Thursday, February 15, 2024 at Richarson Funeral Home.
