AIKEN — Carol has completed her journey through the many stages of Dementia. She passed away calmly at The Place at Shadow Oaks. Carol was born in Greenwood, SC, to the late Helen Hilton Uprichard Marshall and Jack Hampton Uprichard.
She is survived by her husband Ron of Aiken and daughters Leigh Garrett Norton (Michael) of Aiken and Mary Catharine Franks (Bert) of Lake Wylie. Carol was RowRow to granddaughters Lauren Norton, Allie Norton Pebbles (Danny) and Maddie Franks.
She graduated from Greenwood High School, Class of ’64, attended Coker College and the University of South Carolina Aiken, earning a degree in English and Education. She was awarded a Masters in Education from the University of South Carolina. Carol taught English at Silver Bluff High School, was a sponsor of the Beta Club and reinstated the Teacher Cadet program. She found teaching her life’s passion.
She also enjoyed her time outside of work by membership in many clubs around Aiken, including Sand River Woman’s Club, Sunshine Garden Club, PDK Sorority, and was a Girl Scout leader for years. After retirement, we planned to travel but circumstances prevented long trips, so we shared family vacations to Edisto and Highlands.
Carol was a worker; our yard and house were always kept tidy. After that work, she would “hit the pool” for refreshment.
The family thanks many people in our lives, but especially the staff at Shadow Oaks: Lenzie, Minnie, Sheran, and the rest of the ladies. Shadow Oaks was exceptional in care and concern for Carol.
Pam Randolph deserves special recognition for her years of hospice care and her compassionate nursing skills.
Memorials made in Carol’s name may be directed to the Hitchcock Woods Foundation, P.O. Box 1702, Aiken, SC 29802 or the SPCA Albrecht Center for Animal Welfare, 199 Willow Run Rd., Aiken, SC 29801.
The family will receive friends at 3 p.m. Friday, July 26, 2024 at Shellhouse Funeral Home, 924 Hayne Ave. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m., with the Reverend Dr. Fred W. Andrea III officiating. Following the service, a Celebration of Life reception will be held at Newberry Hall.
