Sgt. E5 Jonathan William Nettles, Sr., SCARNG, born on November 9, 1982, to Edwin Roger Nettles, Sr. & Bertha Crouch Nettles of Pelion, South Carolina, entered into eternal rest on Tuesday July 7, 2020.
Jonathan is the loving father of Jonathan William Nettles, Jr. “J.W.”, whose mother is Amy Elizabeth Nettles. He is the son of Roger and Bertha C. Nettles. He is the maternal grandson of Sarah “Granny” Crouch and the late William Pope Crouch. He is the paternal grandson of the late William Ralph and the late Lizzie Nettles. Jonathan is the brother of Edwin Nettles, Jr., Eunice Broach and her husband Kirk, and Joseph Nettles and his wife Shanti. He is the uncle of Gracie Nettles and Ashley Nettles. Jonathan is the nephew of Eva C. Bennett and her husband Ronald, Faye B. Robbs and her husband Butch, and the late James Nettles. He has many cherished cousins and friends.
Jonathan graduated from Pelion High School in 2001 receiving a Small Engine Repair Certification at the Lexington Technology Center. He served as a volunteer firefighter with the Lexington County Fire Service for many years. In 2006, he joined the Army National Guard. Jonathan worked his way up in rank to an E5 Sergeant with the 124th Engineering Company, Saluda, South Carolina. He worked at McEntire Air Force Base in the Paint Shop (CSMS) as a Paint Technician. At the time of his death, he was serving on active duty with the U. S. Army. Jonathan enjoyed the outdoors. In his spare time, he was an avid hunter and fisherman. He also enjoyed small engine repair. Jonathan had a big heart. He was always willing to help anyone in need.
A Service Celebrating Jonathan’s life will be held at Dolorosa Worship Center, 376 Old Charleston Road, Pelion, SC with full Military Honors afforded by the U. S. Army of Fort Jackson, SC. The graveside ceremony will follow at Pelion Oak Lawn Cemetery. Honorary Pallbearers are Brent Bailey, Kirk Broach, William Bennett, Lee Bennett, and Dean Bennett. Pastor Thomas Doolittle and Bishop Mark Crumpton will be ministering.
The Service is being planned at this time and will be updated when arrangements are finalized.
In lieu of flowers, the family is establishing an educational fund for J. W. Nettles, Jr. A memorial account is being established and will be updated with an address or memorials may be given to the family.
