It is with deep sorrow that the Lucas family announces the death of their beloved mother, Mrs. Shirley Howle Lucas, 91.
Mrs. Lucas, the widow of Bobby James Lucas, entered into rest on Wednesday, December 6, 2023. The Directors of Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home & Crematory are caring for the family.
A funeral service to honor her life will be held at 11 o’clock on Saturday, December 9, 2023, in The Chapel of Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home, with The Rev. Greg Delaney officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in her honor to the Darlington County Humane Society, P.O. Box 1655, Hartsville, SC 29551.
Mrs. Lucas was born on December 12, 1931, in Florence, SC. She was the daughter of the late William Galloway Howle and the late Phonise Caston Howle. She was the oldest living Hartsville High School Cheerleader and was a Red Fox fan, listening to her favorite team every Friday night. She attended Coker College and was a lifetime student of history and politics. She was also a world-class bridge player, and an avid reader, enjoying novels by John Grisham and Patricia Cornwell.
She is survived by her loving son, James Howle “Jay” Lucas (Tracy) of Hartsville, SC; daughter, Alyson Carol Lucas of Hartsville, SC; grandchildren, William Galloway Howle Lucas and Carol Ann Arant; one great-grandchild.
