HARTSVILLE, S.C. – May 12, 2011 – Coker College’s Students in Free Enterprise team placed in the top 60 of the nation and won Rookie of the Year in the SIFE National Exposition held in Minneapolis, May 10-12.

“To be named among the top 60 SIFE teams in the country, particularly in their first year, is a spectacular achievement for our students,” said Coker College President Robert Wyatt.  “Beyond this singular accomplishment, I am especially proud of the positive differences they are making in Hartsville and the surrounding region.

“Because improving lives is at the core of SIFE’s work around the world, I need to also express my personal congratulations to and appreciation for all of the teams that participated in today's competition, regardless of whether they are fortunate enough to be able to take a trophy back home to their institutions,” Wyatt said.

SIFE USA is the oldest and largest of the 39 SIFE country operations and with more than 4,000 students, faculty and executives in attendance, the SIFE National Exposition represents the largest gathering of SIFE network members anywhere in the world.

Coker’s winning presentation, a 24-minute multimedia production, featured six projects they supported in Hartsville this year:  Kalmia Gardens, a downtown business incubator; Get Fit, a healthy living program that worked with second grade students; SAT Prep, a program to help college-bound high school students prepare for college admissions examinations; Finance 199, a financial literacy course for both evening and day students at Coker; and a credit score counseling program for Habitat for Humanity’s homeowners.

The $750 award, which the students won this week at the National Exposition, will be re-invested in Coker’s local programs next year.

Six students served on the presentation team: Ashley Meador, Amanda Warner, Caleb Dunlop, Noah Lascell, Timothy Strickland and Christopher Dixon.  The other team members are Lindsey Allen, Qaadir Hicks, Vatrick Thompson, Diego Polo, Juan Vallejo, Tyler Senecal, Adam Bedard, Jessica Covington, James Sweeney, Cody Ellison and Timothy Barrett.  They were assisted by advisors Neil Sickendick and Brianna Douglas.

Last month, Coker’s SIFE team won two titles at the regional SIFE competition in New York City:  Regional Champion and Regional Rookie of the Year.

Earlier this year, this team wrote a successful proposal for a $50,000 grant to support initiatives to help local businesses and was benefited by generous private support that totaled more than $30,000.

Connecting generations of leaders to create a better world, SIFE is an international business and higher education network that works to improve lives, strengthen communities and develop socially responsible business leaders.

Every country that operates a SIFE program is eligible to organize a national competition for the teams in their country. The National Champion team from each country is invited to compete at the SIFE World Cup, which this year will be held Oct. 3–5 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
