Coker College Adds 14 New Faculty Members

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Aug. 30, 2011 – Coker College has added 14 new faculty members this fall, maintaining its student/faculty ratio of 10:1, which is the lowest student/faculty ratio of any independent residential college in the region.

Assistant Professor of Biology Maria Valeria Avanzato earned her Ph.D. from the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, and a Master of Biological Sciences from the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Assistant Professor of English Andrea Cabus earned her Ph.D. in English at Temple University and a Bachelor of Arts with Honors in English history at Otterbein College.

Assistant Professor of English Karen Carpenter earned her Ph.D. in literacy studies from the University of Nevada, a Master of Education from the University of Nevada and a Bachelor of Science in special education from Eastern Michigan University.

Assistant Professor of Education Daniel Ciamarra earned his Ph.D. from Miami University, a Master of Education from Xavier University and a Bachelor of Arts from Northern Kentucky University.

Visiting Assistant Professor of Chemistry Mohamed El-Bermawy earned his Ph.D. and Master of Science from the University of Connecticut and a Bachelor of Science from Zagazig University, Egypt.

Assistant Professor of English Education Margaret Godbey earned her Ph.D. from Temple University, a Master of Arts in English from DePaul University and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from New York University.

Assistant Professor of Music Serena Hill earned her Doctor of Musical Arts and Master of Music from the University of South Carolina and a Bachelor of Music from the University of North Alabama.

Assistant Professor of Library Science Megan Johnson earned her Master in library and information science from the University of Pittsburgh and a Bachelor of Arts in psychology from Pennsylvania State University.

Visiting Assistant Professor of Criminology James La Vale earned his Ph.D. and Master of Arts in sociology from the University of California, Riverside, and his Bachelor of Arts in sociology from California State University, San Bernardino.

Assistant Professor of Chinese Ye Li earned her Ph.D. in contemporary Chinese literature from Capital Normal University in Beijing and her Master of Arts in classical Chinese literature from Capital Normal University in China.

Assistant Professor of Mathematics Rachel Manspeaker earned her Ph.D. from Kansas State University, a Master of Science in mathematics from Kansas State University and a Bachelor of Arts in mathematics from Bridgewater College.

Assistant Professor of Physical Education James McLaughlin earned his Ph.D. in exercise physiology from the University of Tennessee, a Master of Arts in physical education from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a Bachelor of Arts in physical education from the University of South Florida.

Visiting Assistant Professor of Mathematics Peter Nguyen earned his Ph.D. from Kansas State University, Manhattan, a Master of Science and a Bachelor of Arts in mathematics from Saint Louis University.

Assistant Professor of Theater Kindra Steenerson earned her Master of Fine Arts in directing and performance and a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre Studies from Utah State University.
