HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Sept. 13, 2011 – Skin Deep, Miles Wide, an exhibition of painting and sculpture by Lisa Kellner, will open with a public reception on Monday, Sept. 19, from 7 to 8 p.m. in the Cecelia Coker Bell Gallery.

“I am thrilled to be showing Skin Deep, Miles Wide at Coker College because it brings together all iterations of the ideas I pursue in my practice,” said Kellner.

“I tend to work in a spiral around certain root issues, employing the use of a multitude of mediums and processes in order to understand the concept I am working on. For me, clarity comes from exploring the relationship and tension between opposing elements,” she added.

Kellner has exhibited her work in a range of venues including: The Weatherspoon Museum (N.C.), The Islip Art Museum (N.Y.), Paul Robeson Gallery at Rutgers University (N.J.), The Corcoran Museum & Ellipse Art Center (Washington, D.C.) and The Muscarelle Museum of Art (Va.).  Her site-responsive installations have been shown at: The Bellevue Arts Museum (Wa.), The Brooklyn Arts Council (N.Y.), Lower Manhattan Cultural Council Swing Space (N.Y.), The Urban Institute for Contemporary Art (Mich.), and Transformer Gallery (Washington, D.C.).  Her work has been reviewed in, among others, The New York Times, The Boston Globe and Sculpture Magazine.

Kellner received a bachelor’s degree at Boston University, continued her studies at the School of Visual Arts in New York and earned a master of fine arts degree from the Art Institute of Boston.

The reception for Skin Deep, Miles Wide is free and refreshments will be served. A prior engagement will keep Kellner from attending the reception. However, she will return for a closing reception. At that time (to be announced), she will give a gallery talk and answer questions about her work. The exhibition continues through Oct. 14.

The Cecelia Coker Bell Gallery is located in the Gladys C. Fort Art Building on the Coker College campus. Gallery hours are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, while classes are in session.
