HARTSVILLE, S.C. – April 19, 2011 – Coker College Dean of Students Jason Umfress has been installed as President of the South Carolina College Personnel Association (SCCPA).  The Passing of the Gavel ceremony took place on Coker’s campus at the SCCPA Spring Drive-In Workshop it hosted April 5.

“I am honored to serve my colleagues from across the state in this capacity,” said Umfress. “The learning that takes place outside the classroom is an important component of the educational experience in college.”

“For more than 35 years, SCCPA has supported the educators through research, advocacy, professional development and continuing education. I look forward to a busy year as we continue the strategic planning process for the organization.”

A chapter of the American College Personnel Association, SCCPA is the premier professional organization for student affairs professionals in the state of South Carolina.  Membership includes more than 185 student affairs professionals, faculty members and graduate students from public and private institutions.

Umfress holds a Bachelor of Science in mathematics from Delta State University, a Master of Education in college student affairs administration from The University of Georgia and a Ph.D. in higher education leadership from Clemson University.  Having more than 11 years of experience in the field at large and small institutions, Umfress has worked in student activities and leadership, Greek life, orientation, housing and residence life, career services, academic support services and judicial affairs.  He has also presented at numerous state and regional conferences, and his work has appeared in refereed and non-refereed publications.  Umfress serves on the editorial board of the “Palmetto Practitioner” and the “Journal for the Study of Sports & Athletes in Education.”

Established in 1970, SCCPA’s mission is to support professionals who serve students in South Carolina higher education institutions. In turn, SCCPA derives from its members a shared commitment to help colleges and universities provide a campus environment that promotes academic achievement and personal growth and development for all college students.
