HARTSVILLE, S.C. – July 23, 2012 –  This week, in conjunction with the Children’s Defense Fund (CDF) Freedom School, which Coker College Students in Free Enterprise are hosting on campus this summer, program participants will join forces with CDF programs nationwide to draw attention to rights and responsibilities of citizen involvement in our political system.

At 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 25, local Freedom School children carrying colorful, handmade voter registration signs will walk together around Coker’s Davidson Hall and down College Avenue to Fifth Street, at which point half will turn to the right and half will turn to the left to circle back to campus via Home Avenue and East Carolina Avenue.

Also at 1 p.m., some of the students will staff two voter-registration tables.  One will be set up at Piggly Wiggly in Hartsville and the other will be near the entrance of the Charles W. and Joan S. Coker Library-Information Technology Center.

“Voting, a right too many of us take for granted, may be one of the simplest things a parent can do to make sure the interests of their children are taken seriously by lawmakers,” said Coker SIFE Director Ben Chastain.  “By participating in this simple procession, we hope to lift up the voices of Hartsville’s children and offer a reminder to our whole community that every voice, every vote, matters.”

The TEACH Foundation’s PULSE initiative – working with local teachers implementing Yale University’s Comer School Development Program – Carolina Kids and other local non-profit groups have provided consultation services to the SIFE team’s student organizers of the Freedom School at Coker College.  The Freedom School at Coker College is supported, in part, by Sonoco.
