HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Aug. 14, 2012 – Fourteen upperclassmen will soon be living in the lap of luxury in Hartsville.

To celebrate, today Coker College hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony at the newly renovated two-bedroom apartments, “the Downtown Flats,” at 134 E. College Ave.

“This project – a renovation that reclaims a structure erected in the 1920s – is playing an important role in what is destined to become known as a period in Coker’s history when enrollment redefined our expectations – outpacing fine colleges in the state and across the nation,” said Coker College President Robert Wyatt.

“Make no mistake.  Coker College is growing very quickly – by design and with the wind at our backs – and it’s gratifying to know that Hartsville has our backs as well,” he added.

The two-bedroom units include built-in shelving for media, hardwood kitchen cabinets, elegant crown moldings, acid-stained concrete floors, unfinished hardwood pine window trim and exposed pipes overhead.  Each unit has the look and feel of an upscale urban townhouse.  Historic in nature, but designed for the future, these apartments are thoroughly first-class.

Each apartment is approximately 700 square feet and includes its own kitchen (with dishwasher, microwave and refrigerator), living room and bathroom.  Each has cable television access, wireless Internet access, a Daikin heating and cooling system and individually programmed key-card access for security.  The building also has a laundry facility similar to what is available for on-campus residents, onsite storage, parking and an open-air back-porch gathering room for visiting or watching television.

Also speaking at the dedication were building owners Jeff and Crystal Winburn and Coker College dean of students Jason Umfress.

The apartments were made available on a first-come, first-served basis based on Coker’s normal room-draw selection process, to students older than 20. Students living in the flats will be expected to adhere to the same rules and regulations as apply to all of the college’s residents and will be sharing the building with staff from Coker’s department of residence life.
