HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Aug. 22, 2012 – Coker College Director of Athletics Lynn Griffin has been promoted to vice president of athletics and facilities.

“In the two short years that Lynn has been part of the Coker-Hartsville community, she has exemplified leadership at every turn,” said Coker College President Robert Wyatt.

“Whether she’s developing innovative strategies to achieve long-range goals for building a first-rate national program, digging into the details of difficult administrative challenges, or supporting students or colleagues through personal matters, Lynn is terrific. She gives her best, and her best is extraordinary.  I am truly grateful that she has accepted this new responsibility.”

During her tenure at Coker, Griffin has spearheaded the addition of four new sports—women’s golf, men’s lacrosse, men’s volleyball and, next year, women’s lacrosse.  She also led the charge in Coker’s transition to the South Atlantic Conference (SAC), which invitation the college officially accepted in May.  Coker Cobras will begin conference play in the SAC in 2013.

Also in May of this year, thanks to the efforts of Griffin and others on campus, Coker launched its first graduate program, a program leading to a Master of Science in college athletic administration which was approved by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges in January.  Griffin was the instructor for the program’s first course.

Besides being the college’s first foray into graduate programs and its first program offered primarily via online instruction, it changes the college’s institutional classification from Level II, a baccalaureate college, to Level III, an institution that offers a master’s degree as its highest degree.

Griffin is a member of the NCAA Division II Nominating Committee and has served on two NCAA championship committees (women’s basketball and swimming and diving). She is an active member of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics and the NACWAA.

Griffin was named the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletics Administrators (NACWAA) Administrator of the Year in 2008.  Last year she received one of the highest honors that the Indiana Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AHPERD) can bestow, the Pathfinder Award. Given to just one female member of Indiana AHPERD each year, the Pathfinder Award was established to honor members of Indiana AHPERD and National Association for Girls and Women in Sport who have and/or continue to advocate, recruit and enhance opportunities for girls and women in sport and sport leadership.

Prior to joining Coker’s administration, Griffin spent seven years at the University of Indianapolis serving as the senior associate director of athletics/compliance coordinator and senior woman administrator.

Griffin earned a Bachelor of Science from the University of North Carolina-Pembroke; a Master of Education from Tarleton State University and an Education Doctorate from North Central University.

Griffin’s responsibilities include oversight of campus facilities and physical plant staff as well Coker’s NCAA Division II athletic department with 15 intercollegiate teams. In addition she is responsible for athletic department planning, program development and assessment, budget and resource management, supervision of compliance with NCAA and conference rules and regulations, coaching and support staff appointments, professional development, outreach to the local and regional community, fundraising, and recruitment and retention of student athletes.
