HARTSVILLE, S.C. – October 17, 2012 – Coker College will hold the 13th Annual Social Work Conference, “Building Sustainable Social Services in Rural Communities,” from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday.

“Each year the faculty and students of the Coker social work department look forward to welcoming members of our community agencies and organizations, and especially our field supervisors, to Coker’s annual social work conference,” said Elaine Townsend, assistant professor of social work and program director for the department.

Leon Ginsberg, program director for the department of physics and astronomy at Appalachian State University in North Carolina will offer the keynote address.

Ginsberg has built a distinguished career in building and administering social work programs. His contributions to curriculum include not only program and course development but many works, including more than twenty books, which have been used as essential texts, especially in policy, management and rural social services.

“Dr. Ginsberg is a dynamic speaker and has been at the forefront of innovation in social work education and practice throughout his career,” Townsend said. “We also have an excellent line-up of practitioners and administrators from throughout the state, who will address various aspects of providing social services to rural populations in the Pee Dee region.”

In 2011, in recognition for his roles in social work education and public service, especially in child welfare, rural social services and international social work, Ginsberg received the Council on Social Work Education’s Significant Lifetime Achievement in Social Work Award.

Ginsberg has recently completed the fourth of his five-book series titled “Social Work in Rural Communities.” He received his Bachelor of Arts from Trinity University, his Master of Social Work from Tulane University and his Ph.D. from the University of Oklahoma.

All are welcome at the social work conference, which is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Elaine Townsend at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or 843-383-8006.
