The Coker Experience is ‘Active,’ ‘Collaborative’ and ‘Enriched’

HARTSVILLE – Dec. 3, 2012 – The Coker College experience meets or significantly exceeds the performance of 545 participating institutions in all five benchmarks of effective educational practice according to the 2012 National Survey of Student Engagement.

As was the case last year, Coker’s results were particularly strong in two areas for first-year students: Coker’s “active and collaborative environment” and its “enriching educational experiences.”

“As happened last year, the 2012 NSSE data confirm the exceptional value of Coker’s close faculty-student interactions in effective educational practice,” said Coker College President Robert Wyatt.  “The report does not come as a surprise, naturally, but it is gratifying to see that the deep-learning practices for which we are known are making a positive difference for our students.”

Through its 2012 student survey, NSSE collected information from 285,000 first-year students and seniors attending four-year colleges and universities about student participation in programs and activities that institutions provide for their learning and personal development.

“Coker’s results, which showed particular strength in such areas as providing enriching educational experiences and a supportive campus environment for first-year students, affirm that what we call the ‘Coker Experience’ is, indeed, something quite special,” said Coker College Provost Tracy Parkinson.

“It’s one of the reasons that, despite the fact that financial stress negatively affects academic performance and South Carolina’s economy was hard hit by the recent economic downturn, Coker’s first-year retention rate topped the rate for all independent colleges in the state last year.”

The five benchmark areas are: level of academic challenge; active and collaborative learning; student-faculty interaction, enriching educational experiences and supportive campus environment.

Coker College readies undergraduates for personal and professional success through a distinctive four-year program that emphasizes a practical application of the liberal arts as well as hands-on and discussion-based learning within and beyond the classroom. Coker is ranked among the “Best Colleges” in the South by U.S. News & World Report as well as The Princeton Review. Located in Hartsville, S.C., Coker is within two hours of the cultural, financial and recreational resources of Charlotte, Columbia, Charleston and Myrtle Beach.
