HARTSVILLE, S.C. – April 9, 2013 – Lindsey Gollach, a junior psychology major with a concentration in counseling from Columbia, S.C., has been awarded the Library Prize for Undergraduate Research for her project titled “Women's Involvement in the Military: From Past to Present.”

“Over my three years here at Coker all of my professors have been helpful in providing me with the tools I needed,” said Gollach. “But, I really must thank Dr. Tracey Welborn for encouraging me to even consider submitting my work. This award, while it does reflect the work I have done, it is also a testament to how much of an impact my professors at Coker have had on me thus far."

“Lindsey wrote this research paper as a part of the requirement for the Psychology of Gender course,” said professor of psychology Tracey Welborn. “Inspired by her grandmother’s career as a military veteran, Lindsey covered this topic chronologically in a very creative and thorough fashion. She made excellent use of the resources available for student research at Coker College, including the library databases, links to government archives, military websites and books in print. The result is a fascinating study of American women who have served our country in military settings, from the American Civil War to present day. Since Lindsey is only a junior at Coker College, she has yet another year to demonstrate her excellent writing and research skills. Her future as a scholar is indeed very bright!”

This summer, Gollach will complete an internship with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.  After graduation, she intends to continue her education in graduate school and become a school counselor.

With support from the Charles W. and Joan S. Coker Library and Information-Technology Center and the Coker College Undergraduate Research Program, the Library Prize was established to encourage the use of library research techniques and to honor the best research project produced each year by Coker College undergraduate students.

Entries for the prize are judged on originality, depth, breadth.  In addition, the applicants must demonstrate a sophisticated use of library collections, the ability to select, evaluate, synthesize and use library resources in the creation of a project, and evidence of personal growth through the acquisition of new-found knowledge.
