HARTSVILLE, S.C. – April 24, 2013 – Coker College President Robert Wyatt presented the 2013 Distinguished Alumni Service Award to Judy Brown Pigg during the general session of Coker’s 2013 Alumni Reunion Weekend on April 13.

“Judy is the epitome of a Coker lady who gives back to Coker College and asks for nothing in return except the joy of being able to give back,” said Gayle Buckheister Sawyer, class of ’70 and incoming president of the Coker College Alumni Association Board.  “No matter how big or small the task that Judy graciously accepts or volunteers for, she always gives her best.  She’s been doing this for decades. It’s just who she is."

Pigg graduated from Coker in 1968 with a Bachelor of Arts in education.  Over her career in teaching, she taught in three Hartville elementary schools and was twice honored with her school’s teacher of the year qward. Pigg retired from the Darlington County School System in 2004 but continues to provide volunteer service to Carolina Elementary School.

Among the numerous ways she has worked to support Coker, Pigg served as a member of Coker’s alumni board, board of visitors, and events committee. In addition, Pigg volunteers at her church, St. Luke United Methodist Church, where she has served on the church council and taught Sunday school and Vacation Bible School. Formerly, Pigg has served as a Methodist Youth Fellowship leader, president of the United Methodist Women of St. Luke and circle president.

Passionate about Hartsville’s history, Pigg is a member of the John Hart Cottage Guild in Hartsville and received the organization’s President’s Award in 2003.  She is also a former member of the Hartsville Historical Foundation board and chaired the James Lide Coker Leadership Award committee.

Pigg is married to Wayne Pigg and has two children, Julie Schmidler and Miriam Norwood, and two grandchildren, Daniel Norwood and Kate Schmidler.  Pigg also has two sisters, Jane Brown Reichmann and Margaret Brown Young.

This year’s ceremony marked the 30th anniversary of Coker’s Distinguished Alumni Service Award. Recipients for the award must be Coker graduates and are selected based upon their volunteer and community contributions, exceptional service to Coker College and exceptional service to state or nation.
