Hartsville, S.C. – April 24, 2013 – Jim Lemke, Coker College professor of political science and philosophy, was honored with the South Carolina Independent Colleges and University’s (SCICU) Excellence in Teaching Award at a reception and dinner April 17.

The Excellence in Teaching award was created to honor those faculty members from SCICU’s member institutions who demonstrate the highest standards of teaching that encourages students to strive for excellence in their studies and intellectual pursuits.

Lemke, who joined the Coker faculty in 1973, directs the College’s Center for Research Leadership and Community Development and, drawing students from a wide variety of majors, has guided many students through Coker’s pre-law specialization.

“Coker is committed to an engaged pedagogy in which students and instructors gather at round tables for dialogue and exchange.  Dr. Lemke has demonstrated, as much as any faculty member to have served at Coker, a commitment to the philosophy of round-table learning,” said Coker College Provost Tracy Parkinson.  “Dr. Lemke has the capacity to set high goals, expect achievement, and yet always see and seek the potential in every student."

“His passion for the success of the College, as manifested by the success of its students, is extraordinary,” added Coker College President Robert Wyatt.

Previous Coker College recipients of SCICU’s Excellence in Teaching Award are:

  • Sara Odom
  • Kevin Kenyon
  • William Carswell
  • Joseph Flaherty
  • Patricia Lincoln
  • Edward Ebert II
  • Shawn Lay

Chartered by the state of South Carolina as a non-profit, charitable organization, SCICU represents 20 independent colleges and universities, each with a unique historical, cultural and, in many instances, faith background.
