HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Aug. 6, 2013 – Coker College will host an open house and ribbon-cutting ceremony for the newly constructed residence hall at 9 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 15. The event will take place at the site of the new residential village, on the corner of East Carolina and 2nd St. It is open to the public.

“With enrollment numbers at an all-time high, the addition of this residence hall, and, specifically, the new residential village, is vital as we continue to grow as an institution,” said Coker College President Robert Wyatt. “This marks the third residential addition by the college in three years, and it shows our continued commitment to providing our students with top-of-the-line housing options.”

Housing 48 students in all, the 18,096 square-foot, three-story residence hall has 12 total apartments, with four students per unit. Each unit has a living room, a full kitchen, four bedrooms, two full bathrooms, cable television access, wireless Internet access, central air conditioning and individually programmed key-card access for security. The building has on-site parking, a laundry facility, spacious in-unit storage closets, and each floor has a common outdoor porch with eight rocking chairs.

“Building the first of six new residence halls, all in apartment-style format, provides exceptional residential facilities for our upper-class students,” said Steve Terry, vice president for student and enrollment services. “The concept of our residential village, all adjacent to our new athletic center finally becoming reality, is just exciting for all of us at Coker College. This is state-of-the-art housing that provides yet another first-class living-learning community for our students.”

The apartments were open to all upperclassmen on a first-come, first-served basis based on Coker’s standard room-draw selection process. Students living in the new hall will be expected to adhere to the same rules and regulations as apply to all of the college’s residents.

“Being a college student, I feel extremely lucky to have such great living options at Coker,” said Andrew Taske, a rising junior who will live in the new building. “The college is expanding in so many great ways that it is hard not to be ecstatic about the direction we are moving in. The new village and the DeLoach Center, once completed, are going to change the dynamic of this campus. To be part of the first building in the new village is so awesome.

“As construction continues on campus, so does my excitement for my last two years as a student. I cannot wait to move into the new place.”

This residence hall is the first of six to be built over the next few years within the village as part of the Redefining Excellence campaign. The campaign also includes a new athletics facility, the Harris E. and Louise H. DeLoach Center, which broke ground in April and is expected to open in spring 2014.

Both the residential village and DeLoach Center were designed by McMillan Pazdan Smith Architecture, with construction management services provided by Choate Construction.
