HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Aug. 9, 2013 – Coker College professor of education Sara S. Odom’s new book, Lost in New York City, is set to be released by Tate Publishers on Tuesday, Aug. 13. All proceeds from the book will go to the Coker College Wiggins School of Education Study Abroad Program.

Lost in New York City is the fifth book in Odom’s Gram Series which depicts her grandchildren in various settings. Other titles include: Gram’s Switch, Precious Puddin’, My Lucky Irish Ear, and Absolutely Adorable.

“Lost in New York City is the first book in my Gram Series that is narrated by a little boy,” said Odom. “All of my books in this series are based on true-life experiences of our grandchildren, although there are fictional aspects of each book.

“We have 12 grandchildren – seven girls and five boys.  The first four book stories in the series are narrated by the oldest granddaughter in each of our four grown children's families.  My grandsons were feeling slighted, and I decided to let Barrett tell his story first because it truly is a great story. None of us will ever forget that he really did get lost in FAO Schwarz in New York City.”

Odom is a professor of education and the elementary education program coordinator in the Coker College Wiggins School of Education. Odom began teaching at Coker in 1988 as an adjunct and then began teaching full time in 2000. In 2012, Odom received the Excellence in Teaching Award presented at the South Carolina Independent Colleges and University’s Excellence in Teaching Award dinner.

Odom is the senior author of Becoming a Teacher in South Carolina, a comprehensive guide outlining the path for earning a South Carolina teaching credential.  In the academic world, she has made presentations both nationally and internationally.  Odom enjoys talking to school groups about the writing process and her journey in publishing.  She can be contacted at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
