HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Aug. 13, 2013 – James Linville has been elected to serve a three-year term on the Coker College Board of Trustees.

Linville is a Ph.D. student at Princeton University, an internationally competitive Ironman triathlete and an advocate for numerous worthy causes.

“As Coker College looks to build on four years of enrollment within the context of a quickly changing economy, it is vital that we recognize the changing face of leadership,” said Coker College President Robert Wyatt. “Talented members of the millennial generation, like James Linville, can bring a level of drive and original thinking that is indispensable.  I look forward to learning from him.”

Linville has a Bachelor of Arts with High Honors from the University of Virginia, where he majored in Government and Foreign Affairs. As a Ph.D. student, his research focuses on public deliberation, political polarization and the role of education in democratic life.

“I’m grateful to Coker College for this opportunity, and so excited to get to work with everyone involved,” Linville said. “The role of education in our country is both more important and more dynamic than it ever has been, and it’s a privilege to join a leading institution like Coker.”

Linville has given presentations at the University of Virginia, Princeton University, and Boston University School of Law, among others. He has won numerous awards at Princeton and the University of Virginia for both his academic work and his leadership in public service.

He is also a three-time USA Triathlon All-American.  He placed fifth at the 2013 USA Duathlon National Championships and sixth at the 2012 USA Triathlon National Championships.

He spent a year doing social work and organizing at The Boys’ Club of New York (BCNY), and was one of four individuals honored by Mayor Bloomberg and others for outstanding service to the city.

In addition, Linville has served on the Associate Board of Covenant House New York; started a community farm in rural Kenya; helped manage a non-profit art gallery in New York City; and been a research assistant for urban and environmental policy in the office of New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg.

The Coker College Board of Trustees maintains broad responsibility for the mission, long-range direction, policies, and financial condition of the institution.

Coker College readies undergraduates for personal and professional success through a distinctive four-year program that emphasizes a practical application of the liberal arts as well as hands-on and discussion-based learning within and beyond the classroom. Coker is ranked among the “Best Colleges” in the South by U.S. News & World Report as well as The Princeton Review.
