Coker Continues to Break Enrollment Records
Record Enrollment

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Sept, 3, 2013 – For the third straight year, Coker College has enrolled a record number of students. A total of 1,231 students are enrolled at the college for the 2013-14 academic year. Of the 1,231, there are 793 traditional undergraduate students, 406 ALPHA students and 32 graduate students.

“Record numbers like we have seen this year - particularly on the heels of several years of enrollment growth - are particularly meaningful because they confirm the transformative experiences students are receiving at Coker are exceeding expectations,” said Coker College President Robert Wyatt. “Nationally, leaders in higher education along with students, parents, public officials and journalists are focusing intensely on finding ways to measure the value of higher education. While those discussions must and will continue, I would say that an excellent experience speaks volumes and draws astute students more effectively than formula-driven qualifications ever could.”

In addition to the total student population, several records within this year’s enrollment class have also been broken: new freshmen total (233), new student total (344) and traditional day students total (793). Coker’s graduate program has climbed to a total of 32. The college began its first master’s degree program, which is in college athletic administration, in 2012.

“It is certainly a positive and exciting time for every college and university as we open our doors each fall for our new and returning students,” said Steve Terry, vice president for student enrollment services. “For those who work in admissions, financial aid and campus life it is especially gratifying to see the results of the hard work put into recruiting and retaining students. Coker has been fortunate over the years to have a quality faculty and staff that are committed to work together in growing Coker College, and our record enrollment is a testament to all of those who are committed to this great place.”

The college is in the midst of its largest growing period ever. As outlined in the strategic plan, “Destination 1500,” Coker is aiming for 1,500 undergraduate students – 1,000 day and 500 ALPHA and graduate – over the next few years.

“Enrolling the largest incoming class in the history of the college is something special,” said director of admissions Adam Connolly. “The students that enrolled this fall are talented, scholarly, and most importantly, very excited about being part of the Coker community.  The admissions office is eager to begin recruiting for the fall 2014 class and continuing to enroll exceptional students who will be transformed by the ‘Coker Experience.’”

To accommodate the continued growth, over the past three years Coker has opened three new living-learning communities to enhance student housing. The three units for students are the Downtown Lofts (2011), the Downtown flats (2012) and, most recently, the Betty Y. and Charles L. Sullivan Hall. Sullivan Hall rests at The Village at Byerly Place, which will hold six residence halls upon completion.
