Coker and Darlington High Collaborate on Field Trip

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Oct. 14, 2013 – Students from Coker College and Darlington High School are participating in the “Historic Charleston Walking Track and Fitness Field Trip” for the second consecutive year on Wednesday, Oct. 16.

The Coker College Physical Education and Sport Studies Department and Darlington High School Social Studies Department collaborated to put together the field trip, which combines history and wellness.

“This field trip will provide a unique experience for students, as they will walk the historic streets of downtown Charleston while keeping track of health-related statistics through the use of pedometers,” said Suzanne Parker, associate professor of physical education and sport studies and chair of the department. “The purpose of this field trip is for students to learn about our state and nation’s history from the colonial period to the present while becoming more aware of activities that can lead to lifetime fitness.”

Working with Parker to put together this field trip are Darlington High School teachers Michelle Ward and Vickie Longo as well as Coker faculty members Ed Clark, professor of physical education and sport studies, and James McLaughlin, assistant professor of physical education. Parker will also teach a class at Darlington High School instructing students how to use pedometers and the importance of health and wellness.

Twelve students from Coker will go on the field trip along with 20 Darlington High students.
