Coker’s ALPHA Program Relocating to Florence

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Dec. 11, 2013 – The Coker College Adult Learners Program for Higher Achievement (ALPHA) announced today it is relocating the Lake City, S.C., campus to a new site location in Florence, S.C. The Florence site will be at the Poynor Adult & Community Education Center.

Lake City will move its campus at the conclusion of the current semester, which ends in December. The Poynor location will open for ALPHA Term III, which begins in January.

“We are very grateful of the support and partnership of Lake City High School," said Tracy Parkinson, Coker's Provost and Dean of the Faculty. “Coker considers serving working adult students to be a key part of its mission, and thus we are always looking for ways to improve our academic offering. Relocating to Poynor will help us continue serving Florence County residents, including those already involved with the program at Lake City. This is an exciting announcement for our ALPHA program and the college.”

After extensive research, it was determined that a site in Florence would better serve the needs of Coker’s ALPHA students. The Poynor location will provide upgrades in resources for ALPHA students including computer labs, additional parking and extra classrooms. In addition, on-site security will be present at all times.

Previously, classes at Lake City occurred on a Tuesday/Thursday schedule. At the Florence branch, classes will switch to Monday and Wednesday evenings. The four majors offered at Lake City – business, criminology, sociology and social work – will continue to be offered in Florence. Additional majors will be added at a later date.

We are excited to establish an ALPHA location in Florence,” said Elaine Hodges, director of ALPHA recruitment. “Our recruitment activities always involve individuals expressing a desire for a Coker site in the Florence area. To open this location sends a message to our customers that we heard, and are ready, to address their educational needs.”
