Dawn Gettler to Have Work Displayed in Gallery

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – March 3, 2014 – The Cecelia Coker Bell Gallery will present the work of Chicago installation artist Dawn Gettler from March 3-28.

Gettler’s installation sculpture titled “maybe if I called you darling” opens March 3, with a reception in the Cecelia Coker Bell gallery from 7-8 p.m. Gettler will give a gallery talk at 7:10 p.m. followed by a question-and-answer session. Light refreshments will be served, and the reception is free and open to the public. The show runs through March 28.

Some of Gettler’s works are literally as well as figuratively sugarcoated, while others are dipped in salty brine prior to installation. Some of her sculptural installations contain words encased in sugar, texts flocked with sugar or salt, and sheets of text hung in unusual configurations that offer the viewer familiar words in an unusual setting.

Gettler received a BFA in printmaking from The University of Northern Iowa in 2003 and her MFA from Ohio University in 2006. She has been an artist in residence at Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts, Spiro Arts, ART342, KHN Center for the Arts, and Spudnik Press in Chicago.

In 2011, Gettler was the summer artist in residence and mounted a solo exhibition at artspace in Raleigh, NC. In 2012, she was awarded a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts for a full fellowship residency at Women’s Studio Workshop in Rosendale, New York. Gettler had solo exhibitions in the fall of 2012 at Illinois Central College in Peoria, IL, Rx: a Pharmacy Gallery, in Springfield, IL, and Swim in Chicago, IL. She recently installed a site-specific installation, “louder than silence,” in Elzay Gallery at Ohio Northern University in Ada, Ohio. This summer she was invited to install “unrequited,” a solo show, at Emory and Henry College in Emory, VA. Gettler is currently the Residency Program Manager and Gallery Coordinator at the Prairie Center of the Arts in Peoria, IL.

The Cecelia Coker Bell Gallery is located in the Gladys C. Fort Art Building on the Coker College campus. The gallery hours are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, while classes are in session.
