Banks Receives SCICU Excellence in Teaching Award

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Apr. 18, 2014 – Jill Banks, Coker College professor of psychology, was honored with the South Carolina Independent Colleges and University’s (SCICU) Excellence in Teaching Award at a reception and dinner April 8.

The Excellence in Teaching Award was created to honor those faculty members from SCICU’s member institutions who demonstrate the highest standards of teaching that encourage students to strive for excellence in their studies and intellectual pursuits.

“I can think of no one on our campus who better exemplifies the role of professor as mentor than Jill Banks, as she has a stellar reputation for listening, caring and motivating,” said Provost Tracy Parkinson. “In other words, while she is an outstanding classroom teacher, she enthusiastically embraces a much broader role as an educator on our campus.”

Banks has served Coker College and its students since 1987 and is regarded around campus as one of the College’s most engaging faculty members, regularly making use of creativity and innovative pedagogy to ensure a positive and effective learning environment for her students. She is the founder of the Coker College Psychology Honor Society, as well as being involved in many other initiatives on campus.

“Dr. Banks is precisely the kind of professor every institution like ours hopes to have,” said Coker College President Robert Wyatt. “Her primary motivation in everything she does for the College is the success of our students. Any instructor new to higher education would benefit from a day spent with her.”

Banks holds a PhD in counseling psychology from the University of Mississippi, an MA in psychology from Middle Tennessee State University and a BA in sociology and psychology from the University of Tennessee. In addition to her position with Coker College, she has served as a visiting professor at Webster University and Clemson University.  She also serves as a vocational disability examiner, a consultant with mental health associations and a licensed counselor supervisor.

Previous Coker College recipients of SCICU’s Excellence in Teaching Award are:

  • Sara Odom, professor of education and coordinator of the elementary education major
  • Kevin Kenyon, associate professor of history and coordinator of the social studies education major and the museum studies specialization
