Coker College Hosts Sixth Annual Play Day

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Apr. 20, 2014 – On Wednesday, April 23, Coker College and the Wiggins School of Education will host the sixth annual Play Day celebration from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Play Day is a community event created to promote the importance of play, celebrate childhood learning and raise awareness of issues affecting young children and their families. The celebration includes a morning of games and activities for preschool-age children held on the Bell Tower Lawn of Coker’s campus.

“The beauty of childhood is found in the pure joy experienced by a child who is learning through play,” said Darlene Maxwell, professor of education and coordinator of the early childhood education major. “This miraculous adventure is the greatest tool we have for educating our children.”

Coker College students and professors work collaboratively to develop the games and activities that promote active engagement and learning through play. Last year’s Play Day activities entertained 615 children with a reptile exhibit, math games, potato sack races, face painting and more.

“Play Day at Coker celebrates and promotes the important role play has in the development of young children and is a wonderful way for faculty, staff and students to come together for this service learning opportunity,” said Susan Henderson, associate professor of education and chair of the Wiggins School of Education. “I commend Dr. Darlene Maxwell for bringing this event to our campus and for advocating for the importance of play in all of our lives.”
