Coker College Named to President's Honor Roll

Hartsville, S.C. — Coker College has been named to the 2009 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, the highest federal recognition a college can receive for its commitment to volunteering, service-learning and civic engagement.

“Congratulations to Coker College and its students for their dedication to service and commitment to improving their local communities,” said Patrick Corvington, CEO of the Corporation for National and Community Service, which administers the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. “They have achieved impactful results and demonstrated the value of putting knowledge into practice to help renew America through service.”

Coker College is on the honor roll for its work with The Durant Children’s Center in Hartsville, Hispanic students in Darlington County, and for its Play Day for area children.

The Durant Children’s Center is a Hartsville-based agency that serves victims of child abuse and neglect. For a class project last year, six Coker students developed and organized a campus drive that collected over 250 much-needed items for the center, including cleaning supplies, toys and books.

Last spring, Coker College senior Danielle Haney of Hartsville served a large group of Hispanic students in Darlington County by assisting an English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher. Haney provided translation services for the teacher, the students and their families, created Spanish-language materials, and taught conversational and academic skills. She also gathered information from schools in Mexico to help Darlington County teachers better understand the Mexican education system.

In April 2009, over 400 children and 50 teachers from area schools participated in Play Day on Coker’s campus. Established in 2006 by the college’s education department, Play Day is an annual spring event for children aged three to five that features a wide array of activities designed to encourage children to play outside and engage their minds. Coker students play a vital role in hosting Play Day activities.

The 2009 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll recognizes over 700 colleges and universities across the country. Coker College is one of 10 institutions in South Carolina on the 2009 honor roll. Nationally, 3.16 million students performed more than 300 million hours of service in 2009, according to The Corporation for National and Community Service.

The Corporation for National and Community Service is a federal agency that engages more five million Americans in service through its Senior Corps, AmeriCorps, and Learn and Serve America programs, and leads President Obama's national call to service initiative, United We Serve.
