Hartsville, S.C. – January 26, 2017  –  Coker College will host the Sankofa African-American Museum on Wheels for a two day event on Monday, January 30, from 2pm-8pm, and Tuesday, January 31, from 9am-1pm.

The museum will be located at the Auxiliary Gym of the Harris E. & Louise H. DeLoach Center Gymnasium on the Coker College campus. Presentations will be held both days: Monday at 5pm and 7pm, Tuesday at 9:30am and 11:30am, and will last approximately 20 minutes.

Sankofa is a term coined by those living in Ghana, West Africa, specifically by King Adinkera, a member of the Akan tribe, meaning “it is not taboo to go back and fetch what you have forgotten.”

The exhibit is curated by Angela W. Jennings. Jennings says, “we must go back and reclaim all that has been stolen, lost, hidden and ultimately forgotten in order to preserve and rebuild our present and our future.”

Jennings is a world traveler and collector of historical artifacts. Her first trip to Ghana in 1983 was the beginning of what would later be her traveling museum. The Sankofa African-American Museum on Wheels’ exhibits span from 1860 to the present, highlighting important figures in modern African-American history, such as Ida B. Wells, the Negro Baseball League, the Tuskegee Airmen and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., as well as some key African-American inventors and innovators.

This event is made possible through the generous support of the Hartsville Branch of the NAACP as well as the following Coker College offices: The Student Experience, SGA, African American Studies Specialization, Office of the President, and Office of the Provost.

The event is free and open to the public.
