Smoke-free Campus

Coker Goes 100% Smoke-Free Jan. 1st

In the spring of 2013, as part of a campus-wide wellness initiative, the Coker College Student Government Association polled students, faculty, and staff to gauge interest in switching to a smoke-free campus. The results were overwhelmingly positive in support of going smoke-free.

At Coker, we take pride in our tight-knit, supportive community, and we believe in creating an environment that reflects our community values. So in response to this feedback, our entire campus will be going smoke-free starting January 1st, 2014. Smoking will no longer be allowed at all times on all locations of Coker’s campus, including all off-site ALPHA locations, Kalmia Gardens, the Sory Boathouse and Byerly Park. The same will apply for any tobacco product after Aug. 15, 2014.

By going smoke-free, we will be joining more than 1,182 colleges nationwide that have adopted similar policies. Going smoke-free will also:

  • support our wellness programs by making healthy living a key aspect of the Coker Experience,
  • promote pride and respect for our campus by reducing litter and waste,
  • protect our campus community from harmful second-hand smoke,
  • and foster a supportive environment for those who are trying to quit using tobacco products.

But most importantly, we will be ensuring a clean and healthy environment where all students, faculty, staff, and visitors can enjoy working, learning, and living.
