Degree Requirements

To be awarded the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Social Work or Bachelor of Music Education degree from Coker College, a student must earn a minimum of 120 semester hours of credit with a 2.0 grade point average in all courses taken under the ABCDF grading system. The student must complete the Liberal Arts Studies Program requirements, all requirements specific to his/her academic major(s), and all requirements specific to any elected minor(s) or specialization(s). At least 25% of the total degree hours must be taken at Coker College. Each student must earn a minimum of 30 semester hours in upper level (300 or 400) courses. The final 30 semester hours must be taken in residence at Coker College. Residency requirements for military students are as designated by the Servicemembers Opportunity Colleges agreements.

All students are expected to fulfill the degree requirements of the current catalog unless there are undue hardships involved.

Specific courses that fulfill the Liberal Arts Studies Program requirements are listed in the “Academic Programs” section of the Catalog. Courses that may be used to satisfy the LASP requirements also have specific designators following their titles in “Course Offerings.” Please refer to that section for the course designators.

A placement evaluation for English composition is mandatory for all students, including transfer students. Diagnostic examinations are available to determine level of placement in biology, foreign languages, and mathematics. Refer to the relevant section in “Course Offerings” for details.

A major is comprised of 30 to a maximum of 45 semester hours within a single program area and may include additional hours in other areas.  A minimum of 12 semester hours of the major must be taken at Coker. As a requirement for graduation, a student must have earned a minimum 2.0 grade point average on all courses within the major unless noted in the description of the specific major. Courses which satisfy the primary major requirements may not be applied toward the Liberal Arts Studies Program (LASP) requirements. Requirements for a second major may be filled in part by courses taken to meet LASP requirements. A course may not be applied toward the requirements of more than one major.
