This year’s focus is on Claude Debussy. Students will study and perform late Romantic and
Modern French music to include Debussy, Saint-Saens, Faure, Ravel, Messiaen, Poulenc, and
others. We will learn more about the French aesthetic and the lives of French composers.
Students must be currently enrolled in grades 7 through 12 (no older than 18 by July 1, 2018). Students in grades 7-9 must have completed at least two years of piano study. Students in grades 10-12 must have completed at least four years of piano study. All students must have experience performing in public recitals. Students must also be currently studying piano with a private instructor.
Students will receive new works for learning and performing during the week of study. These pieces are assigned by teachers based on the repertoire listed on the application. The daily schedule will include private lessons, group lessons, ensemble rehearsal and coaching, and piano literature exploration class. Students may have an opportunity to meet with their teachers and choose new music before the institute begins.
All students will receive daily lessons, masterclasses, and practice time. Some free time will be built into the schedule for performing in the community, watching music films, and other activities.
